Descripción.

La región del Douro está situada en el nordeste de Portugal, en la cuenca hidrográfica del río Duero. Una zona protegida por montañas que le confieren características climáticas idóneas para el desarrollo de una importante industria vitivinícola que produce vinos que seducen y sorprenden en todo el mundo. Otros vinos portugueses reconocidos internacionalmente son los de Oporto. Los vinos tintos con Denominación de Origen Douro se elaboran a partir de uvas autóctonas, como la touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinta barroca y tinto cão. La gran mayoría de los vinos procede de la mezcla (coupage) de varios tipos de uvas, con una complejidad y riqueza sin igual. La uva touriga nacional utilizada para elaborar este excelente vino tinto se vendimia de cepas viejas con más de 80 años de antigüedad. De profundo color rojo oscuro con ribetes violáceos, tiene aroma a cerezas muy maduras y ciruelas, a chocolate negro y a especias, como el clavo y la vainilla, con fuertes toques minerales. Carácter Douro.

Al otro lado de la frontera, el Duero se llama Douro. Un cambio de nombre que da lugar a un paisaje majestuoso y a una enorme variedad enológica donde los Oportos son los reyes, y su corte, tintos y blancos que el consumidor empieza a apreciar. Los vinos tranquilos lusitanos, hermanos de los célebres y casi aristocráticos oportos, demuestran, con pocos años de vida, un nivel de calidad que los situa entre los primeros puestos del ranking. Mientras tanto, los legendarios oportos han continuado manteniendo su lugar entre la élite enológica, sostenidos por el arte de las mezclas y un más que trabajado marketing, al que apoya, en un discreto segundo plano, un emergente enoturismo que quiere revitalizar el lugar del cual proceden: el majestuoso paisaje de viñedos que bordea el territorio del río. Sin embargo, a pesar de que su carácter, marcado por la corriente fluvial, encuentra muchas similitudes con el resto de vinos del Duero (riberas, toros…), lo cierto es que estos productos continúan siendo casi desconocidos en España.

Los Douros blancos.
El esfuerzo realizado alrededor de los tintos no ha impedido el desarrollo en la región de unos blancos que están empezando a encontrar su sitio dentro del panorama de los vinos tranquilos portugueses. Se elaboran con variedades autóctonas (una apuesta que ha dotado a la región de una singularidad de la cual presume justificadamente), entre las que predominan la rabigato, la viosinho, la arinto, la malvasía, la moscatel y la confusa gouveio, confusa porque se puede encontrar con el nombre de verdelho, a pesar de que no es la misma que su sinónima de Madeira, y tampoco tiene nada que ver con la verdejo tan utilizada en España. Es precisamente esa frescura uno de los puntos comunes que tienen muchos vinos blancos de la región, aportada en parte por la tierra plagada de “xisto” o pizarra. La calidez de la zona (más de 40 grados en verano), que juega en su contra, provoca que los vinos no realicen la fermentación maloláctica.

Los Oportos.
En la misma región, donde nacen para ser envejecidos después en Vilanova de Gaia, los oportos mantienen el tipo de elegancia, complejidad y estilo propios de cada casa. Algunos elaboradores, y el propio IVDP, apuestan por reforzar el enoturismo en la ciudad y en el valle como una herramienta fortísima de conocimiento y difusión de estos vinos, no demasiado fáciles de entender para el inexperto. Y de paso, van rompiendo unos tópicos de consumo que pondrían los pelos de punta a elaboradores de vinos generosos en otras partes del mundo.

La Touriga Franca es una variedad de uva tinta que tiene una gran importancia en la elaboración de vinos tintos secos de Oporto en la región vitivinícola del Douro (Portugal). Es una de las principales variedades utilizadas en las mezclas de Oporto, junto con otras variedades de Douro bien consideradas, como Tinta Roriz y Touriga Nacional. Está muy extendida en el Alentejo, el Tejo, las Beiras y las áreas vitivinícolas de los alrededores de Lisboa. A pesar de su fuerza como uva para mezclar, y mejorar caldos de otras variedades, también podría ser utilizada para elaborar vinos monovarietales, aunque esta opción no es demasiado utilizada por los productores, ni siquiera en su Portugal natal.

La touriga nacional es una variedad de uva tinta considerada por muchos como la mejor de Portugal donde alcanza desde las tierras de los vinos verdes del Miño hasta la región vitícola del Algarve. Se atribuye la introducción de esta cepa a los fenicios. A pesar del bajo rendimiento de la vid, por lo pequeño de sus uvas, tiene un papel desacado en las mezclas de los vinos de Oporto. Cada vez se usa más como uva de mesa en la DOC Douro y en Dão. Para Jancis Robinson, la touriga franca es a la touriga nacional lo que la cabernet franc a la cabernet sauvignon. La touriga nacional provee de estructura al vino y la touriga franca completa su buqué. Así como Australia tiene a Syrah como su principal variedad de uva, en España es la noble Tempranillo la referencia en sus vinos y en Argentina la uva Malbec es la reina, la touriga nacional es la uva mejor considerada y más noble de Portugal.




Características.

A pesar de ser fértil, es decir, se adapta bien a diversos terrenos, la Touriga Nacional tiene baja productividad debido a su carácter de elevado vigor fisiológico y también al corrimiento del racimo causado por su alta sensibilidad a los cambios climáticos. La producción media es de un kilo al 1,5 kg/cepa; causa del abandono de su cultivo. Es una variedad de brotación y floración tempranas, alcanza la madurez a mediados del periodo de vendimia. Prefiere suelos poco profundos y pedregosos. Los racimos de la touriga nacional son de tamaño pequeño, de forma cilíndrico-cónica y de media compacidad. Las bayas son de color negro azulado, de tamaño mediano, ligeramente aplanadas y con un hollejo medio grueso. Los pequeños granos de touriga nacional tienen una alta relación piel-pulpa, lo cual aumenta la extracción en el vino, A partir de estas uvas pueden obtenerse vinos muy aromáticos e intensos, con un alto contenido tánico. Su cultivo exige cuidados especiales, ya que su maduración es intermediaria; virtudes como rusticidad y fuerte resistencia a plagas, sin embargo, hacen de ella una casta especial.




Zonas de cultivo.

Como antes hemos dicho, es una uva portuguesa, y es en Portugal donde está más implantada, desde la Región de los Vinos Verdes de Minho hasta la zona vitivinícola de Algarve, abarcando una superficie total cercana a dos mil hectáreas de viñas, según el instituto de la Viña y el Vino de Portugal. Vinos.

Esta variedad de uva touriga nacional da vinos tintos muy aromáticos e intensos, con una alta carga tánica. Las pequeñas uvas de touriga nacional tienen un alto ratio de piel con respecto a la pulpa, lo que aumenta la cantidad de extracto seco en la elaboración del vino. Estas uvas pueden producir un vino intenso muy aromático y con una alta cantidad de taninos. Es una variedad muy empleada en ensamblajes de vinos no fortificados, y la base de muchos oportos legendarios. La touriga nacional es versátil y produce vinos diversos, pero siempre elegantes, con un buen grado alcohólico, una gran concentración de color, alta complejidad, taninos finos, sabores intensos, volumen, equilibrio y aromas florales distintos. Esta variedad de uva es muy versátil, pudiéndose elaborar con ella vinos espumantes, tintos secos finos, vinos licorosos. La tinta amarela o trincadeira es una uva de vino tinto que se usa comúnmente en la producción de vino de Oporto. Esta uva destaca por su coloración oscura. Su uso en la región del Duero ha aumentado en los últimos años. Es una de las variedades de uva más plantadas en Portugal. Es la variedad de uva más antigua y plantada en la región de Alentejo, donde se llama trincadeira. Características.

La vid es susceptible a la podredumbre y se desempeña mejor en climas secos y cálidos. La tinta barroca es una uva tinta portuguesa que crece sobre todo en la región del Duero portugués (Douro). Hay algunas plantaciones en Sudáfrica. Laura Regueiro es la propietaria de Casa Amarela y su familia se ha dedicado, durante tres generaciones, a la producción de vino de Porto. Hoy, con la colaboración de Susana Esteban y Jean-Hugues Gros en la parte técnica, elaboran sus dos Casa Amarela, uno en versión blanco y otro en tinto, un Reserva y, excepcionalmente, el Gran Reserva Elisio, además de un vino que elaboran de forma conjunta con Paulo Laureano, icono de los vinos de Alentejo, mezcla de las dos zonas (el vino se finaliza en Alentejo, con una producción limitadísima, de tan sólo dos barricas, que amistosamente se reparten). Casa Amarela se elabora con las variedades autóctonas touriga nacional, tinta barroca, touriga franca y tinta amarela; se muestra en una línea marcadamente floral (violetas y lilas), con notas de piruletas y anises, y sorprende por su componente mineral, que destaca en boca con un efecto salino, y una textura jugosa y femenina, con tanino dulce y muy pero que muy amable. Casa Amarela, un señor vino para amar.
