Desde 1842, fecha en que se fundó esta compañía, hasta nuestros días, han sido varias generaciones de master-blenders han acompañado a los Niepoort en este cometido. Han sido los Nogueira los responsables de establecer los coupages necesarios para tan exitosos resultados. La historia de dos familias unidas por la ilusión de hacer brillar el esplendor de los dulces vinos del valle del Duero.Desde que el actual ideólogo de Niepoort, Dirk Van Der Niepoort, empezó a trabajar en la bodega en 1987, la obsesión de esta empresa ha sido la de aunar con las mismas energías tradición y modernidad. Así, continúan con algunas de las mayores tradiciones de los vinos portugueses, como el pisado de la uva, la fermentación en lagares de granito o la crianza en pipas (nombre de las barricas de 550 litros que se utilizan para el envejecimiento de los oportos), mientras introducen técnicas vanguardistas como la microvinificación o la evaluación de los grandes vintages a partir de los 3 meses en lugar de a los 16, como venía siendo habitual hasta entonces. Para convertirse en una de las bodegas de referencia en la elaboración de vinos de Oporto, Niepoort ha hecho de Vila Nova de Gaia la cuna de este vino. Ahí se asientan en la actualidad la mayoría de las bodegas que elaboran los típicos Ruby, Tawny, LBV y Vintage portuenses. En este lugar, los Niepoort poseen viñas de más de un siglo procedentes de diferentes viticultores con los que tienen contratos desde entonces, una de las formas históricas de trabajar la propiedad en la tierra del Duero. También ahí, a 70 kilómetros de la ciudad que da nombre a este vino, se levantan las naves de crianza de esta firma, situadas en la histórica bodega de Serpa Pinta, donde se producen unas 45.000 cajas al año con el sello de Niepoort.
Un referente en Oportos.
Niepoort es un referente ineludible de los vinos de Portugal. Especialmente conocida por sus vinos de Oporto, desde hace ya algunos años es también una gran marca de vinos secos, tanto tintos como blancos, de la región del Douro. De origen holandés y estructura familiar desde que Franciscus Marius Niepoort fundó la empresa en 1842, Niepoort cuenta hoy con la quinta generación al frente de la empresa, cuyo nombre, Dirk van der Niepoort. Casi siempre, dos generaciones trabajaron lado a lado durante largos años, contribuyendo a una transición exitosa. La misión de esta compañía es mantener su posicionamiento de "niche player", dando continuidad a la producción de distintos vinos de Oporto y Vinos del Duero, conjugando la tradición secular con la innovación. Descripción.
La región del Douro está situada en el nordeste de Portugal, en la cuenca hidrográfica del río Duero. Una zona protegida por montañas que le confieren características climáticas idóneas para el desarrollo de una importante industria vitivinícola que produce vinos que seducen y sorprenden en todo el mundo. Otros vinos portugueses reconocidos internacionalmente son los de Oporto. Los vinos tintos con Denominación de Origen Douro se elaboran a partir de uvas autóctonas, como la touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinta barroca y tinto cão. La gran mayoría de los vinos procede de la mezcla (coupage) de varios tipos de uvas, con una complejidad y riqueza sin igual. La uva touriga nacional utilizada para elaborar este excelente vino tinto se vendimia de cepas viejas con más de 80 años de antigüedad. De profundo color rojo oscuro con ribetes violáceos, tiene aroma a cerezas muy maduras y ciruelas, a chocolate negro y a especias, como el clavo y la vainilla, con fuertes toques minerales. En la boca es carnoso, casi se puede masticar, con un recorrido por el paladar largo, untuoso y persistente. Un vino que deja huella.
Carácter Douro.
Al otro lado de la frontera, el Duero se llama Douro. Un cambio de nombre que da lugar a un paisaje majestuoso y a una enorme variedad enológica donde los Oportos son los reyes, y su corte, tintos y blancos que el consumidor empieza a apreciar. Los vinos tranquilos lusitanos, hermanos de los célebres y casi aristocráticos oportos, demuestran, con pocos años de vida, un nivel de calidad que los situa entre los primeros puestos del ranking. Mientras tanto, los legendarios oportos han continuado manteniendo su lugar entre la élite enológica, sostenidos por el arte de las mezclas y un más que trabajado marketing, al que apoya, en un discreto segundo plano, un emergente enoturismo que quiere revitalizar el lugar del cual proceden: el majestuoso paisaje de viñedos que bordea el territorio del río. Sin embargo, a pesar de que su carácter, marcado por la corriente fluvial, encuentra muchas similitudes con el resto de vinos del Duero (riberas, toros…), lo cierto es que estos productos continúan siendo casi desconocidos en España.
Los Douros blancos.
El esfuerzo realizado alrededor de los tintos no ha impedido el desarrollo en la región de unos blancos que están empezando a encontrar su sitio dentro del panorama de los vinos tranquilos portugueses. Se elaboran con variedades autóctonas (una apuesta que ha dotado a la región de una singularidad de la cual presume justificadamente), entre las que predominan la rabigato, la viosinho, la arinto, la malvasía, la moscatel y la confusa gouveio, confusa porque se puede encontrar con el nombre de verdelho, a pesar de que no es la misma que su sinónima de Madeira, y tampoco tiene nada que ver con la verdejo tan utilizada en España. Es precisamente esa frescura uno de los puntos comunes que tienen muchos vinos blancos de la región, aportada en parte por la tierra plagada de “xisto” o pizarra. La calidez de la zona (más de 40 grados en verano), que juega en su contra, provoca que los vinos no realicen la fermentación maloláctica.
Los Oportos.
En la misma región, donde nacen para ser envejecidos después en Vilanova de Gaia, los oportos mantienen el tipo de elegancia, complejidad y estilo propios de cada casa. Algunos elaboradores, y el propio IVDP, apuestan por reforzar el enoturismo en la ciudad y en el valle como una herramienta fortísima de conocimiento y difusión de estos vinos, no demasiado fáciles de entender para el inexperto. Y de paso, van rompiendo unos tópicos de consumo que pondrían los pelos de punta a elaboradores de vinos generosos en otras partes del mundo.

La Touriga Franca es una variedad de uva tinta que tiene una gran importancia en la elaboración de vinos tintos secos de Oporto en la región vitivinícola del Douro (Portugal). A pesar de que se planta en mucha mayor cantidad que la touriga nacional, la touriga franca es la menos prestigiosa de las dos uvas. Sus orígenes no están claros y su nombre puede resultar engañoso, ya que la touriga franca no es una uva francesa. Parece más probable que la touriga franca sea una mutación o un cruce de touriga nacional y otra variedad probablemente con la mourisco de semente. De cualquier manera, los rendimientos abundantes que produce la Touriga Franca la han convertido en una parte integral de los vinos del Douro. En California esta variedad es conocida como touriga, sin apellido, sin embargo en Australia es a la variedad touriga nacional a la que se denomina simplemente touriga.
Características.
La touriga franca es de cuerpo más aromático y ligero que la touriga nacional. Es una variedad resistente y de fácil cultivo, que suele dar muy buenos rendimientos. La touriga franca muestra aromas delicados pero intensos, con notas frutales, de bayas negras y flores, combinados con un cuerpo amplio y un color intenso. Es una de las principales variedades utilizadas en las mezclas de Oporto, junto con otras variedades de Douro bien consideradas, como Tinta Roriz y Touriga Nacional. Está muy extendida en el Alentejo, el Tejo, las Beiras y las áreas vitivinícolas de los alrededores de Lisboa. A pesar de su fuerza como uva para mezclar, y mejorar caldos de otras variedades, también podría ser utilizada para elaborar vinos monovarietales, aunque esta opción no es demasiado utilizada por los productores, ni siquiera en su Portugal natal.

Excelente Vino Tinto, bastante corpulento y seco. Muy adecuado, funciona con todos los platos de tapas clásicos. Lo califico como mi favorito y bebo mucho. Desafortunadamente se vende mucho, así que compre hay que comprarlo pronto.
