Descripción.

El Médoc es una de las más importantes regiones que componen el amplio mapa vitivinícola de Burdeos. Se haya situado en la orilla izquierda del estuario de la Gironda, en la parte más septentrional de Burdeos, y en ella se elaboran algunos de los mejores vinos franceses. Una de las primeras cosas que sorprende del Médoc es que, pese a la fama de sus vinos, no se trata de una zona a priori idónea para el cultivo de la vid, y esto es debido a su excesiva proximidad con el Océano Atlántico, lo que provoca un clima muy oceánico, marcado por la abundante humedad y la alta pluviometría, lo que origina problemas de prodredumbre casi de forma constante. Sin embargo, este problema se resuelve en gran parte gracias a sus suelos, uno de los grandes secretos de esta región. El terreno en el Médoc es bastante llano, y su suelo está compuesto mayoritariamente de grava, que permite que se retenga el calor, se drenen las lluvias y se optimice tanto el sistema de raíces de las plantas como la maduración de sus uvas. Este suelo de grava, predominante en la zona más cercana al Gironda, se combina también con suelos calizos e incluso puramente arcillosos, más comunes a medida que el terreno se aleja del estuario, dando como resultado por lo general vinos más rústicos. Aunque el Médoc está compuesto por una gran cantidad de Apelaciones de Origen Controladas (AOC) de enorme prestigio, la región geográfica está compuesta por dos grandes denominaciones genéricas: la AOC Médoc y la AOC Haut-Médoc. La primera (antiguamente llamada Bajo Médoc) corresponde a la zona más cercana a la desembocadura del Gironda, y por tanto, más próxima al océano; mientras que el Haut-Médoc (Alto Médoc) corresponde a la zona más próxima a la ciudad de Burdeos, y por lo tanto está ubicada a mayor altitud, siendo históricamente la de mayor prestigio vinícola.




El Haut-Médoc y sus denominaciones.

Se ubica en la orilla izquierda del Gironda, en la parte más alejada de su desembocadura en el Atlántico. Se trata de una franja de tierra que abarca aproximadamente 60 kilómetros de largo y que tradicionalmente fue una región de marismas usada más para la ganadería que para la viticultura. Sin embargo, todo cambió en el siglo XVII, cuando unos comerciantes holandeses desarrollaron un ambicioso programa de drenajes a fin de convertir la zona en una próspera región de viñedos. Genéricamente, la AOC Haut-Médoc es una subdenominación que ocupa más de 4.500 has. de viñedo, formando casi un 30% del total del viñedo del gran Médoc. En la AOC Haut-Médoc se encuentran unas 400 propiedades vitícolas, de las cuales aproximadamente 250 son bodegas independientes. Estas bodegas trabajan principalmente con el Cabernet sauvignon, que representa más del 50% del total, y con otras variedades más minoritarias en la zona como la Merlot, la Petit verdot, la Cabernet franc, la Malbec o la Carménère. Además de la genérica AOC Haut-Médoc, dentro del Alto Médoc geográfico se encuentran hasta seis denominaciones diferentes. Son la AOC Margaux, la AOC Listrac-Médoc, la AOC Moulis-en-Médoc, la AOC Saint-Julien, la AOC Pauillac y la AOC Saint-Estéphe. En estas apelaciones se encuentran la mayoría de las fincas registradas dentro de la Clasificación Oficial del Vino de Burdeos de 1855. Además, las fincas con la máxima clasificación de esa lista, Primer Cru, también se ubican allí.




Zona producción y suelos.

Al sur de la península de Médoc, con un área que abarca 4.596 hectáreas. Comprende, por un lado, los municipios en la orilla del Garona y la Gironda: Blanquefort, Parempuyre, Ludon, Macau, Arcins, Lamarque, Cussac y Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, y por otro lado, los municipios tierra adentro: Le Taillan, Le Pian-Médoc, Avensan, Saint-Laurent-Médoc, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac y Vertheuil. Los dos tipos de suelo básicos que tienen son, uno, un suelo que tiene grava y piedra caliza arcillosa, favorables para la variedad Cabernet. Y los otros suelos, que retienen la humedad, ricos en arcilla y pesados, más adecuados para el cultivo de la uva merlot.
