Historia.

La elaboración de vino en el Castillo Perelada está documentada ya desde la Edad Media. Cuando Miguel Mateu compró este conjunto monumental en 1923, uno de sus principales objetivos fue la revitalización de esta tradición vitivinícola, una tradición que hoy se encuentra más viva que nunca y que ha incorporado la más moderna tecnología para elaborar unos vinos que sacan el máximo partido de los matices de los suelos y viñedos del Empordà. Fue en la localidad de Peralada donde Miguel Mateu Pla descubrió y se apasionó por el mundo del vino y donde decidió fundar la bodega Castillo Perelada, recuperando una tradición secular que se remonta al siglo XIV. A principios de la década de los 90, Castillo Perelada decidió apostar por la elaboración de vinos de alta calidad. Lo que algunos denominan vinos de alta expresión. Este nuevo enfoque se ha concretado en una serie de inversiones en investigación y desarrollo. Esta reducida área de terreno concentra una variedad de suelos que se da en muy pocos lugares: laderas de pizarra, llanuras de arena, sedimentos de origen fluvial, tierras ricas en limos y arcillas, suelos de grava... Esta heterogeneidad de terrenos permite a Castillo de Perelada recoger en cada vendimia uvas con una amplísima gama de matices que permiten la elaboración de unos vinos complejos y llenos de carácter.




Los vinos.

Las uvas blancas son garnacha blanca, macabeo, moscatel, xarel·lo y chardonnay. Por contra las tintas son cariñena, garnacha tinta, syrah, ull de llebre / tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc y merlot. Perelada estudia en sus viñedos la influencia que tienen sobre el resultado final factores tales como la recolección en distintos momentos de madurez, el terreno de cultivo, la exposición solar y la optimización del riego. En la actualidad se han plantado en ella diversas variedades blancas cuya adaptación a las condiciones geofísicas y climatológicas del Empordà está siendo testada de forma experimental. La finca Malaveïna representa una de las promesas con más futuro de Castillo Perelada. En efecto, este viñedo ha dado como resultado la obtención de vinos de gran personalidad, permitiendo la elaboración del primer vino de finca de esta bodega, el Castillo Perelada Finca Malaveïna.

El Consejo Regulador es la entidad que gestiona la Denominación de Origen “Terra Alta”. En sus inicios se constituyó como una oficina descentralizada de la administración de la Generalitat de Cataluña y así fue desde el reconocimiento oficial de la DO “Terra Alta” en 1982 hasta el año 2005, cuando en el marco de la Ley 15 / 2002, de 27 de junio, de ordenación vitivinícola, el Consejo Regulador alcanza plena capacidad jurídica y de obrar para el desarrollo de sus funciones y se reconstituye como una corporación de derecho público. Poniendo siempre el acento en los valores del terruño, de los viñedos y de la cultura que caracterizan una denominación de origen, el Consejo Regulador combina la gestión privada y la pública para representar, garantizar, defender y promocionar la DO “Terra Alta” con el fin de impulsar el desarrollo del sector vitivinícola en la zona de producción y hacer los “Terra Alta” un valor a tener en cuenta por los consumidores de vinos finos.




Características.

En los vinos elaborados bajo el sello de la D.O. Terra Alta predominan las variedades de uva tradicionales de la zona, de “Mediterráneo de interior”, siguiendo los rasgos propios de la identidad de su cultura vitivinícola, imprimiendo a sus caldos las características de del terruño. La vid se planta en terrazas naturales, disfrutando del clima mediterráneo, pero con fuerte influencia continental, con oscilaciones térmicas entre los 6 °C bajo cero y los 38 °C. La pluviosidad es escasa, 350 mm anuales, por lo que se suele podar la vid muy corta, para que tenga un porte rastrero que aproveche la humedad del terreno. Predomina la producción de vino blanco, elaborado con garnacha blanca y macabeo. Son potentes, recios, de gran cuerpo y alta graduación. Para los rosados y tintos se usa la cariñena, la garnacha tinta y la peluda. Hay también producción de vino dulce y mistela.




Zonas de cultivo.

La zona de producción y elaboración de la DO “Terra Alta” (DOTA) está situada al sur de Cataluña, entre el río Ebro y la frontera con tierras aragonesas y comprende los 12 términos municipales de la comarca de la Terra Alta. Su paisaje mantiene todos los rasgos característicos de un terruño de interior cercano al Mar Mediterráneo: cordilleras calizas prelitorales (Puertos de Horta, Sierras de Pàndols i Cavalls), pequeños ríos (el Algars y el Canaletes), montañas de roca conglomerada, bosques de encina y pino blanco y sobre todo, suelos agrícolas teñidos de los típicos cultivos mediterráneos: almendro, vid y olivo. Dentro de este marco hay que añadir tres unidades de paisaje de interés agrícola claramente diferenciadas: La Plana, el Altiplano y los Valles.




Condiciones edafológicas.

Los suelos de cultivo presentan generalmente texturas medias. Tienen como denominador común su riqueza en caliza y son pobres en materia orgánica. El catálogo de suelos de la DOTA clasifica hasta 17 perfiles, de entre los que destaca el Panal. Otro de los rasgos que reivindica el carácter mediterráneo de interior es la climatología. Abundante insolación y pluviometría escasa. Destacan dos particularidades: un singular equilibrio entre los dos vientos dominantes, el cierzo, que sopla del noroeste y la garbinada, que son marinadas de componente Sur, y un invierno frío que denota cierta continentalidad.




Los vinos.

Los "Terra Alta Garnatxa blanca" se distinguen por su color amarillo, con matices que oscilan desde el pálido hasta los dorados, una nariz sutil y sobre todo por la alta intensidad de sabores en boca. Un color y un sabor que, alejados de los estereotipos, no renuncian a la autenticidad que le confiere su origen mediterráneo. Los vinos tintos, en general, son potentes y ásperos, de un color intenso, con un cierto regusto afrutado, y están elaborados con las variedades clásicas cariñena y garnacha. La verema, a mediados de septiembre, es una buena excusa para acercarse a la Tierra Alta. Hoy en día, los terra alta son unos de los vinos más preciados de Cataluña. Su calidad ha sido reconocida en prestigiosos certámenes nacionales e internacionales, y las guías especializadas más rigurosas les otorgan altas calificaciones.

Origen.

Esta uva, procedente del noreste de España, hay controversia sobre si de Alicante, Aragón o Cataluña, es una mutación de la garnacha tinta. Como toda mutación, comparte gran parte de las características de su predecesora, salvo por el color del racimo. Es conocida también como Alicante blanca, belan, feher grenache, garnatxa blanca, vernatxa blanca, rool grenache, silla blanc, sillina blanc y grenache blanc. Su cultivo se extiende por el sureste de Francia y el noreste de España, formando parte de los vinos con D.O. Alella, Costers del Segre, Tarragona y Terra Alta, siendo en ésta última donde se encuentra la tercera parte de la producción mundial. No obstante, también está autorizada en otras D.O. españolas como Cariñena, Cigales, L’Empordá-Costa Brava, Navarra, Priorat, Somontano y Rioja y en Francia en las zonas vitivinícolas de Rousellony el Valle Agy.




Características.

Las viñas de Garnacha Blanca se caracterizan por tener hojas de tamaño medio, pentagonales y con cinco lóbulos, con racimos de tamaño pequeño/mediano, bastante compactos y provistos de pedúnculos mu cortos. Las con uvas son medianas, de forma elíptica, que en su estrujado generan un hollejo fino. Las cepas son muy vigorosas y fértiles, de brotación media, así como su maduración, dando unas producciones medias, al igual que sus rendimientos. Resisten muy bien a la sequía y se adaptan a terrenos poco fértiles y pedregosos, no así a zonas con exceso de humedad y a condiciones de encharcamiento. Como la garnacha tinta, es muy sensible al corrimiento del racimo, aunque en menor medida. Esta variedad de viña es muy sensible a varias enfermedades y plagas como la excoriosis, mildiu, botrytis y necrosis bacteriana, pero en mucha menor medida al oídio. También le afecta sensiblemente la polilla del racimo, pero no los ácaros. Los suelos con carencia de magnesio suelen exteriorizarse fácilmente en esta uva.




Vinos.

Las extraordinarias características propias de la garnacha blanca como la acidez que le confieren esta compensación con el alcohol, el equilibrio en los matices oxidativos tan complejos a la hora de su elaboración y su madurez tardía a pesar del calor, hacen de ella una variedad que no deja impasible a quien la disfruta. Especialmente en la D.O. Terra Alta, han sabido entender la garnacha blanca como uva principal para elaborar vinos varietales de altísima calidad que ofrecen la frescura de su fruto y la tipicidad del Mediterráneo. Los vinos elaborados con uvas garnacha blanca son alcohólicos, con acidez media alta y ricos en extracto, con bajos contenidos en potasio y ácido málico. En fase visual presentan un tono amarillo-verdoso, expresándose en nariz con aromas de intensidad media, notas florales, afrutadas y herbáceas. Su boca es ligera, ácida y con persistencia media. Su contenido en oxidasas aconseja una esmerada elaboración para evitar oxidaciones precoces. Con esta variedad se elaboran vinos blancos monovarietales, o bien en mezcla con otros tipos de uva blanca. Suelen utilizarse para producir vinos blancos dulces naturales, así como vinos rancios de color dorado, grasos y amplios, que se consumen como vinos de postre.
