Consejo regulador.

El Consejo Regulador es la entidad que gestiona la Denominación de Origen “Terra Alta”. En sus inicios se constituyó como una oficina descentralizada de la administración de la Generalitat de Cataluña y así fue desde el reconocimiento oficial de la DO “Terra Alta” en 1982 hasta el año 2005, cuando en el marco de la Ley 15 / 2002, de 27 de junio, de ordenación vitivinícola, el Consejo Regulador alcanza plena capacidad jurídica y de obrar para el desarrollo de sus funciones y se reconstituye como una corporación de derecho público. Poniendo siempre el acento en los valores del terruño, de los viñedos y de la cultura que caracterizan una denominación de origen, el Consejo Regulador combina la gestión privada y la pública para representar, garantizar, defender y promocionar la DO “Terra Alta” con el fin de impulsar el desarrollo del sector vitivinícola en la zona de producción y hacer los “Terra Alta” un valor a tener en cuenta por los consumidores de vinos finos.




Características.

En los vinos elaborados bajo el sello de la D.O. Terra Alta predominan las variedades de uva tradicionales de la zona, de “Mediterráneo de interior”, siguiendo los rasgos propios de la identidad de su cultura vitivinícola, imprimiendo a sus caldos las características de del terruño. La vid se planta en terrazas naturales, disfrutando del clima mediterráneo, pero con fuerte influencia continental, con oscilaciones térmicas entre los 6 °C bajo cero y los 38 °C. La pluviosidad es escasa, 350 mm anuales, por lo que se suele podar la vid muy corta, para que tenga un porte rastrero que aproveche la humedad del terreno. Predomina la producción de vino blanco, elaborado con garnacha blanca y macabeo. Son potentes, recios, de gran cuerpo y alta graduación. Para los rosados y tintos se usa la cariñena, la garnacha tinta y la peluda. Hay también producción de vino dulce y mistela.




Zonas de cultivo.

La zona de producción y elaboración de la DO “Terra Alta” (DOTA) está situada al sur de Cataluña, entre el río Ebro y la frontera con tierras aragonesas y comprende los 12 términos municipales de la comarca de la Terra Alta. Su paisaje mantiene todos los rasgos característicos de un terruño de interior cercano al Mar Mediterráneo: cordilleras calizas prelitorales (Puertos de Horta, Sierras de Pàndols i Cavalls), pequeños ríos (el Algars y el Canaletes), montañas de roca conglomerada, bosques de encina y pino blanco y sobre todo, suelos agrícolas teñidos de los típicos cultivos mediterráneos: almendro, vid y olivo. Dentro de este marco hay que añadir tres unidades de paisaje de interés agrícola claramente diferenciadas: La Plana, el Altiplano y los Valles.




Condiciones edafológicas.

Los suelos de cultivo presentan generalmente texturas medias. Tienen como denominador común su riqueza en caliza y son pobres en materia orgánica. El catálogo de suelos de la DOTA clasifica hasta 17 perfiles, de entre los que destaca el Panal. Otro de los rasgos que reivindica el carácter mediterráneo de interior es la climatología. Abundante insolación y pluviometría escasa. Destacan dos particularidades: un singular equilibrio entre los dos vientos dominantes, el cierzo, que sopla del noroeste y la garbinada, que son marinadas de componente Sur, y un invierno frío que denota cierta continentalidad.




Los vinos.

Los "Terra Alta Garnatxa blanca" se distinguen por su color amarillo, con matices que oscilan desde el pálido hasta los dorados, una nariz sutil y sobre todo por la alta intensidad de sabores en boca. Un color y un sabor que, alejados de los estereotipos, no renuncian a la autenticidad que le confiere su origen mediterráneo. Los vinos tintos, en general, son potentes y ásperos, de un color intenso, con un cierto regusto afrutado, y están elaborados con las variedades clásicas cariñena y garnacha. La verema, a mediados de septiembre, es una buena excusa para acercarse a la Tierra Alta. Hoy en día, los terra alta son unos de los vinos más preciados de Cataluña. Su calidad ha sido reconocida en prestigiosos certámenes nacionales e internacionales, y las guías especializadas más rigurosas les otorgan altas calificaciones.

Origen.

Originaria de Cataluña, la Parellada es una variedad bien adaptada a altitudes elevadas, más frías, donde el periodo de crecimiento es más largo, permitiendo un pleno desarrollo de la acidez y aromas a cítricos. En suelos fértiles alcanza unos buenos niveles de producción. La parellada es la más fina de las variedades blancas tradicionales del Penedès. Es una de las uvas básicas para la elaboración del cava, junto con la macabeo y la xarel·lo.




Características.

Cepa de maduración tardía, gran vigor y porte tumbado, la parellada es una viña de desborre precoz y elevada producción. Tiene una capacidad media de enriquecimiento en azúcares. Alcanza una madurez óptima en las zonas más elevadas del Penedés, la zona donde está más implantada. Los racimos de parellada son de gran tamaño, bastante compactos, con los hombros muy marcados y homogéneos. Los pedúnculos son delgados y de longitud media, con baja lignificación. Las bayas de la Parellada son de tamaño mediano, redondeadas y ligeramente elípticas en sección longitudinal, su piel es de un color amarillo dorado-verdoso, con un racimo de tamaño más bien grande y apretado. Su hollejo es grueso, pulpa verde, consistente y bastante jugosa con aroma peculiar. Estas viñas dan una elevada producción al tener mucho vigor, fertilidad elevada y gran tamaño de los racimos, sin embargo tienen dificultad en la maduración. La cepa de uva parellada es muy sensible al mildiu, bastante a la podredumbre ácida y al oídio y baja a la botritis. Su acidez es elevada.




Zonas de cultivo.

La Parellada es una variedad de uva blanca española, cultivada principalmente en las zonas altas de Cataluña, aunque también está autorizado su cultivo en las Comunidades de Aragón, Baleares, Navarra, País Vasco, La Rioja, Extremadura, Madrid y Castilla la Mancha. Conocida también con otros nombres, como Martorella, Masiá, Montonero, Montonega y Montonet, podemos encontrarla bajo diversas Denominaciones de Origen españolas, tales como Alicante, Valencia, Penedés, Terra Alta o Tarragona.
La parellada es recomendada para la comunidad autónoma de Cataluña. Además, es una variedad autorizada en las comunidades de Aragón, Baleares, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Comunidad de Madrid, Navarra, País Vasco y La Rioja. Se cultiva en las denominaciones de origen Alella, Binissalem-Mallorca, Cariñena, Cataluña, Cava, Conca del Barberá, Costers del Segre, La Mancha, Penedés, Pla de Bages, Pla i Llevant, Ribera del Guadiana, Tarragona, Terra Alta, Utiel-Requena y Vinos de Madrid.




Vinos.

Produce blancos aromáticos, secos, de graduación moderada, aroma fresco y una delicada acidez afrutada. Los vinos son así apreciados, por un lado, por sus aromas florales y afrutados de cítricos, piña y frutas tropicales y, por otro, por su sedosidad y consistencia, que le confieren gran riqueza y equilibrio en boca. Los vinos monovarietales obtenidos a partir de esta variedad, suelen ser de un amarillo verdoso pálido, de poco cuerpo y baja graduación alcohólica (entre 9 y 10º), así como poco ácidos, siendo ideal su consumo como vino joven. En cuanto a nariz, sus aromas son sutiles y elegantes a flores. En Cataluña suele mezclarse con macabeo y xarel·lo para producir el vino blanco espumoso cava, para darle estructura, finura, longitud y elegancia.1 Además, es usada como uva de mezcla para vinos blancos jóvenes. Algunos productores la mezclan con chardonnay y con sauvignon blanc.
