Hermitage es una pequeña denominación con 140 hectáreas, 345 acres, de viñedos, responsables de los vinos más prestigiosos de Francia. Estos están a la par con los de Côte Rôtie, 45 km al norte, y Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 110 km al sur. Los vinos rojos y blancos de Hermitage son longevos y con mucho cuerpo. Historia.
La denominación toma su nombre de la leyenda del caballero cruzado Gaspard de Stérimberg, quien regresó a casa, herido, de la Cruzada albigense en 1224. La Reina de Francia le permitió construir un pequeño refugio en la ladera, donde vivió como un ermitaño. El prestigio del vino de Hermitage se remonta claramente al siglo XVII, cuando era un vino oficial en las cortes francesas del rey Luis XIII y su sucesor Luis XIV, el "Rey Sol". No solo el vino preferido de los monarcas, también se usó como un regalo para los dignatarios visitantes y la realeza extranjera.
