Amplia tradición vitícola.
El Empordà, en el extremo nororiental de Cataluña, presenta un paisaje de contrastes, con los límites naturales de los Pirineos al norte y el mar Mediterráneo, con la espectacular Costa Brava al este, lo que convierte al Empordà en un lugar único, un territorio extraordinario entre mar y montaña, marcado por la presencia del viento del norte, la tramontana. Además de ser una tierra de gran belleza paisajística, con varios espacios naturales protegidos y un litoral espectacular de playas y calas, el Empordà posee también un gran patrimonio histórico y cultural: menhires y monumentos megalíticos, arquitectura gótica, arte románico, pueblecitos encantadores, el arte surrealista del genio Salvador Dalí… Todo un conjunto de atractivos a los que hay que sumar su gente y la buena gastronomía, con la particular cocina ampurdanesa y la nueva restauración, representada por figuras como Ferran Adrià, complemento ideal para los vinos de la DO (denominación de origen) Empordà. No hay duda que la cultura del vino y el conocimiento del comercio del producto de la viña llegan a Cataluña aproximadamente en el s.VI a.C., gracias a la más importante colonia griega del país, Empúries, ciudad que, pasados los siglos, dará nombre a toda la comarca del Empordà. Cuatro siglos más tarde, ya hay constancia arqueológica y documental de que los vinos de los territorios de Emporiae y de otros lugares de la Tarraconense son conocidos en los mercados interiores, en otras provincias del Imperio Romano y en la propia metrópoli. En la edad media, cuando las viñas crecían cerca de las abadías y monasterios, en las faldas de la montaña de Rodes se fueron escalonando bancales plantados de cepas, tuteladas por el monasterio de Sant Pere de Rodes, en el que parece que destacó en el arte de elaborar el vino el monje bodeguero Ramon Pere de Noves, a quien se atribuye un tratado sobre esta materia. Sant Quirze de Colera o Santa Maria de Vilabertran constan también como propietarios de viñas en el Empordà. En los siglos XVIII y XIX la viña pone en evidencia su capacidad colonizadora y simboliza el impulso agrícola, traducido en un importante crecimiento demográfico en su zona de cultivo y la conformación de un paisaje propio de cipreses, muros, barracas y bancales de piedra seca. La plaga de la filoxera, aparecida en el año 1879 en una viña de Rabós d’Empordà antes que en ninguna otra viña catalana, arruina totalmente este periodo próspero de los vinos ampurdaneses. La reanudación es dura, nunca más se recupera para la viña toda la tierra que había ocupado antes de la plaga. El movimiento de las bodegas cooperativas, impulsado por la Mancomunidad primero, y, después, por la Generalitat republicana alrededor de 1930, abre una nueva etapa que permite sumar esfuerzos en la mejora de la calidad en el proceso de elaboración del vino, construyendo nuevas bodegas y mejorando el sistema de comercialización. Igualmente, la iniciativa privada se suma enseguida a estos esfuerzos y el vino de calidad del Empordà empieza a ser conocido y apreciado en muchos mercados.
Zona producción DO del Alt Empordà.
La zona de producción del Alt Empordà se encuentra en el extremo nororiental de Cataluña va desde la ciudad de Figueres hacia el norte hasta la frontera con Francia, resguardada en las faldas de las sierras de Rodes y de las Alberas, en un arco que va desde el cabo de Creus a la denominada Garrotxa d’Empordà (Albanyà). Limita, por tanto, con los Pirineos al norte, el Mediterráneo al este y la llanura propiamente dicha al sur. Los municipios que abarca la DO en el Alt Empordà son 35: Agullana, Avinyonet de Puigventós, Biure, Boadella i les Escaules, Cabanes, Cadaqués, Cantallops, Capmany, Cistella, Colera, Darnius, Espolla, Figueres, Garriguella, La Jonquera, Llançà, Llers, Masarac, Mollet de Peralada, Palau-saverdera, Pau, Pedret i Marzà, Peralada, Pont de Molins, Portbou, Port de la Selva, Rabós, Roses, Sant Climent Sescebes, Selva de Mar, Terrades, Vilafant, Vilajuïga, Vilamaniscle y Vilanant.
Zona producción DO del Baix Empordà.
La zona de producción del Baix Empordà se encuentra delimitada al norte por el macizo del Montgrí, al suroeste por el macizo de Les Gavarres, que forma una llanura costera con el macizo de Begur, y al este con el Mediterráneo. Los municipios que abarca la DO en el Baix Empordà son 20: Begur, Calonge, Castell-Platja d'Aro, Forallac, Mont-ras, Palafrugell, Palamós, Palau-sator, Pals, Regencós, Torrent, Torroella de Montgrí y Vall-llobrega.
Los suelos.
La DO Empordà presenta una gran heterogeneidad de terrenos, que mayoritariamente son de textura arenosa y pobres en materia orgánica, idóneos para la producción de vinos de elevada calidad. Generalmente son ácidos y están situados desde el nivel del mar hasta un máximo de 260m de altitud. Cabe distinguir las zonas de la llanura donde predominan los suelos de origen aluvial, de las zonas y faldas de montaña, donde los suelos son de pizarra y graníticos, con paisajes de gran belleza.
El clima.
El rasgo climático más característico y con más impacto sobre el cultivo es el fuerte viento del norte, la Tramontana, con rachas que a menudo superan los 120 kilómetros por hora, y que tiene unos efectos muy beneficiosos para el buen estado sanitario de la viña. Por otra parte, los inviernos son suaves, con pocas heladas, y los veranos calurosos, atemperados por las brisas marinas. La temperatura media anual está comprendida entre los 14 y los 16ºC. La pluviometría se sitúa alrededor de los 600 litros anuales. En lo que se refiere a la temperatura y la insolación, la zona ampurdanesa se sitúa en la región III de la clasificación Winkler y Amerine, lo que la convierte en idónea para el cultivo de variedades de ciclo mediano y largo, y extraordinaria para la elaboración de vinos dulces naturales. En conjunto, el clima resulta muy favorable para el buen desarrollo vegetativo de la viña destinada a la producción de vinos de calidad, sin las estridencias de los vinos meridionales.
Las viñas.
Los actuales viñedos de la Denominación de Origen son mayoritariamente de antigua implantación, con viñas de más de 30 años de edad, lo que resulta muy positivo desde el punto de vista de la calidad del producto final, ya que es conocido el hecho de que las viñas antiguas producen vino de gran calidad. Paralelamente, en los últimos años han experimentado una importante renovación y mejora para adaptarlas a las técnicas de cultivo modernas y realizar ciertos cambios varietales. En lo que se refiere a las variedades tintas recomendadas por la DO, domina la Cariñena o Samsó, que constituye la base de la viticultura ampurdanesa junto con la Garnacha tinta (denominada en la zona Lledoner). Estas variedades tradicionales se complementan con nuevas variedades que se van introduciendo, como pueden ser el Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot y Syrah. Las variedades viníferas blancas dominantes son la Garnacha, blanca y tinta, y Macabeo. En mucha menor proporción se encuentran el Moscatel, el tradicional Xarel.lo y, de nueva implantación, el Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc y Gewurztraminer. Como variedades recomendadas en las variedades de uva blanca nos encontramos Garnacha blanca, Garnacha roja, Macabeo o Viura, Moscatel de Alejandría. Y como uvas blancas autorizadas están el Chardonnay, el Gewurztraminer, la Malvasía, el Moscatel de grano pequeño, el Picapoll blanco, el Sauvignon blanco y el Xarel·lo. En la variedad de uva tinta recomendada está la Cariñena y la Garnacha tinta. La uva tinta que se autoriza es el Cabernet sauvignon, el Cabernet franc, el Merlot, el Monastrell, el Tempranillo, el Syrah y la Garnacha peluda.
Los vinos.
Se elaboran todo tipo de vinos, desde los vinos blancos en todos sus estilos, pasando por rosados y tintos, hasta dulces y espumosos con DO Cava en algunos municipios. En general Los vinos tintos son de buena calidad, con cuerpo, bien constituidos y armónicos, en ocasiones matizados por una cuidadosa crianza, mientras que los vinos blancos son frescos y sabrosos, frecuentemente elaborados con variedades autóctonas, pero también con otros monovarietales de notable calidad. También se elaboran rosados, caracterizados por un color cereza bien definido, una gran personalidad y aroma delicado, frescos y de graduación alcohólica moderada. Una singularidad de la zona es la Garnatxa de l’Empordà, un vino dulce natural con el sabor propio de la uva madura, cálido y sedoso, virtudes que lo convierten en un vino de postres excepcional, junto con el Moscatell de l’Empordà, el otro vino dulce propio de la zona.
