Fiel a los orígenes.
Siguiendo la tradición vinícola de sus antepasados castellanos, Carlos Moro fundó en 1988 la bodega Matarromera en Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) con un objetivo claro: crear vinos de calidad empleando la tecnología más avanzada y respetando, al mismo tiempo, las formas de elaboración tradicionales. El principal reto asumido por Carlos Moro fue su apuesta por las barricas nuevas para la crianza de sus vinos, una iniciativa por entonces novedosa en Ribera del Duero. Otra de las claves del éxito de Matarromera son sus excelentes viñedos, situados en una zona mítica de la D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero. Matarromera fue la primera bodega de Carlos Moro y el germen de uno de los grupos vinícolas más importantes de este país: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. El primer tinto que elaboró la firma un antecesor de la marca que hoy conocemos como Melior- logró el título de Mejor Vino del Mundo en el Concurso de la Organización Internacional de la Viña y el Vino (OIV) celebrado en Turquía en 1995. Actualmente, Bodega Matarromera cuenta con 150 hectáreas de viñas propias y 160 hectáreas más controladas.
Terreno y variedades.
Ubicada en Valbuena de Duero, en el corazón de la D.O. Ribera del Duero, Matarromera cuenta con cerca de 30 años de vida. Fue levantada en 1988 por Carlos Moro con el objeto de diseñar y elaborar vinos de la más alta excelencia, retomando así el esplendor de una de las tierras con más herencia vitivinícola de nuestro país. En sus 200 hectáreas de viñedo propio, en plena Milla de Oro de la Ribera del Duero, predomina la Tinto fino o Tempranillo, aunque tambien hay algunas cepas de Cabernet sauvignon y Merlot que llegan a alcanzar medio siglo de edad. Cuenta con vinos que siguen la norma tradicional de elaboración ribereña, creando vinos categorizados en Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva, así como Vinos de Pago y de diseño específico como el Matarromera Prestigio y el Matarromera Prestigio Pago de las Solanas. Rodeada por sobresalientes parcelas de viñedo, un edificio elegante de estilo castellano, de piedra y ladrillo, esconde en su interior silenciosas naves semienterradas donde el vino descansa tras haber sido proyectado con la mayor tecnología enológica uniendo así la tradición y la innovación que tanto caracteriza a esta bodega y a sus distinguidos vinos. Ese respeto a las tradiciones y la constante innovación son los secretos del éxito de la casa. Matarromera incorpora en este sentido los últimos avances tecnológicos y medioambientales tanto en bodega como en el cultivo de los viñedos. Su apuesta por la investigación y la implantación de un sistema de extrema calidad está permitiendo optimizar hoy en día los procesos de trazabilidad y el control de cada pago y cada majuelo. La enorme calidad de los vinos lo acreditan los amantes de la marca y esto se ve respaldado por numerosos premios y distinciones nacionales e internacionales.
Los apoyos de la bodega.
En la Ribera del Duero, Bodega Matarromera posee más de 200 hectáreas de viñedo propio de 10, 35 y 50 años, localizadas en los mejores pagos de las poblaciones de Valbuena de Duero, Olivares de Duero y Pesquera de Duero: Pago de las Solanas, Pago Valdevaniego, etc. La bodega dispone de varias naves semienterradas en la ladera norte de Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid), orientada al mediodía y protegida de los vientos del norte. Más de 2.000 barricas de roble americano y francés componen su sala de crianza, unas instalaciones donde la bodega elabora aproximadamente 750.000 botellas al año.

Origen.
Esta uva, muy probablemente tiene su origen en Algaida, en el norte de África y su historia se remonta al reinado de Alfonso VI, Rey de León, entre los siglos XI y XII, cuando, tras la reconquista de Toledo, la zona del Duero fue repoblada por vascones, cántabros y mozárabes. Estos nuevos habitantes la plantaron en las zonas de Toro y Rueda. En el año 1980 se crea la Denominación de Origen Rueda, entre las provincias de Valladolid, Segovia y Ávila, que es la principal zona productora de vinos de uva verdejo.
Características.
Las variedad verdejo es el fruto de cepas semirrastreras, de porte postrado, vigor medio, poco fértiles y de producción elevada. De estas cepas se obtienen unas uvas de piel es fina, color verde amarillento y de tamaño entre pequeño y mediano, uniformes, esféricas, con hollejo de grosor medio y pepitas grandes. Posee una pulpa sin pigmento, jugosa pero insípida. Los racimos tienen un tamaño pequeño-mediano, son compactos y su pedúnculo es muy corto. Los viñedos de verdejo tienen una brotación media, maduración media-tardía y ciclo medio. Es una variedad con un amplio grado de adaptación por lo que tolera bien la sequía moderada y se adapta a suelos poco fértiles y pedregosos. Más cercana al Macabeo que al Chardonnay y Sauvignon Blanc en cuanto a rusticidad y productividad se refiere. Se le atribuyen problemas de corrimiento del racimo.
Zonas de cultivo.
La uva verdejo está muy extendida en toda la comunidad de Castilla y León, dentro de la cual, donde se encuentra la zona con mayor concentración de viñedos de variedad verdejo, la D.O. Rueda, cuya extensión supera las 13.500Ha plantadas. En la comunidad de Castilla y León también utilizan la variedad verdejo las D.O. de Cigales, León y Toro. Además de las zonas anteriormente citadas, existen viñedos de verdejo en Extremadura y Castilla-La Mancha y pequeñas cantidades plantadas en Asturias, Cataluña y Murcia. En la década de 2010 se empezó a cultivar en Barossa Valley, al sur de Australia.
Vinos.
Los vinos elaborados con variedad verdejo presentan colores que van de amarillo verdoso a pajizo, con tonos acerados y capa ligera media. La graduación alcohólica es moderada y su relación ácido tartárico/ácido málico es elevada. Poseen un buen extracto seco y resultan muy glicéricos, suaves, sabrosos y retrogusto amargo persistente. En nariz aportan aromas intensos, afrutados no notas herbáceas, flores blancas con tonos de almendra amarga, lo que les imprime una fase olfativa inconfundible. En el pasado se elaboraban vinos generosos a partir de uvas verdejo, haciendo una coupage con la variedad palomino, sin embargo, actualmente se tiende a hacer vinos jóvenes monovarietales de excelente calidad, así como otros, no menos buenos, con Sauvignon Blanc y Macabeo. Recientemente se están utilizando estas uvas para elaborar vinos espumosos. En la actualidad también se elaboran caldos de verdejo con crianza en barricas de roble lo que le imprime complejidad al vino.
