El Marqués de Pombal delimitó la región, con la ayuda de los jesuitas a quienes más tarde expulsaría, y clasificó todas las propiedades según su orientación, la naturaleza del suelo, la altitud del viñedo ... y además, detuvo el volumen de producción para cada propiedad.
