La bodega Abadía Retuerta se ubica en una finca donde había existido tradición vitivinícola tiempo atrás y la empresa Novartis se convenció de que merecía la pena recuperarla. El lugar no podía ser mejor: Abadía Retuerta se encuentra en el término vallisoletano de Sardón de Duero, en la Milla de Oro ribereña, uno de los lugares de mayor interés vinícola del país. La propiedad, que tiene una extensión de 700 hectáreas, alberga actualmente 180 hectáreas de viñedo, sólo se plantaron los mejores ‘terroirs’ y de ella salieron los primeros vinos con la añada 1996, creados con viñas de entre 3 y 5 años de edad. La evolución de la viña y un minucioso trabajo en campo como una limitación, básicamente, de rendimientos, ha convertido a esta firma en una de las más prestigiosas en tierras del Duero. Sus vinos están diseñados por los enólogos Ángel Anocíbar y el francés Pascal Delbeck, este último como asesor, y reciben cada añada las más altas puntuaciones en las guías especializadas. El viñedo de Abadía Retuerta está plantado a diferentes altitudes que llegan hasta los 850 metros, dividiéndose en 54 pagos o parcelas, según la diversidad de los suelos. Cada parcela está cultivada con la variedad que mejor se adapta a ella, y se trabaja y se vinifica por separado, elaborando unos vinos que son el reflejo de cada ‘terroir’. Integrada en el viñedo se levanta la bodega, una de las más innovadoras y tecnológicamente avanzadas de Europa. La apuesta por el enoturismo es un valor añadido de Abadía Retuerta: la finca alberga además el imponente monasterio de Santa María de Retuerta, del siglo XII, rehabilitado para albergar el hotel de lujo LeDomaine, cuyo restaurante -asesorado por Andoni Luis Aduriz- cuenta con una 1 Estrella Michelin.
La Finca.
La Finca de Abadía Retuerta ocupa una gran superficie de más de 700 hectáreas y su nombre proviene de la unión de dos palabras que definen y describen el territorio: Rívula, ribera/orilla, y Torta, tortuosa, curvada. Las más de 204 hectáreas de viñedo se distribuyen sobre una conjunto de laderas que desde una altura máxima de 850 metros bajan hasta la margen sur del río Duero. Tenemos una gran variedad de suelos donde aparecen representados la mayoría de grandes viñedos del mundo y la tecnología más avanzada (estaciones meteorológicas, torres antihelada, etc. La superficie total de los viñedos es de 204 hectáreas, sobre una superficie total de 700 hectáreas. De las plantaciones de viñedos, las 3/4 partes están plantadas con Tempranillo; el restantes, es decir, 1/4 de la plantación restante, es prácticamente Cabernet Sauvignon, un poco de Merlot y una pequeñísima cantidad de Syrah y Petit Verdot. Se disponde de tecnología para controlar en todo momento el estado de la planta, para que cada cosecha se consiga obtener la máxima calidad, manteniendo las características propias de cada añada. La bodega fue diseñada por el afamado enólogo francés Pascal Delbeck en 1996: Es una sorprendente combinación de tradición y modernidad, siendo reconocida como una de las bodegas más avanzadas de toda Europa. Ocupa una superficie de 10.000 m2 y en ella se elabora una producción limitada de vinos, ya que se prima la calidad sobre la cantidad.
El Legado.
La Abadía de Santa María de Retuerta, fundada a finales del siglo XII, ha permanecido como testigo dentro de los límites de la finca Retuerta. Se trata de una de las obras más importantes del románico en la provincia de Valladolid, construida por el Conde Sancho Ansúrez, cuya fundación se remonta al año 1146, y debida a Doña Mayor, cuarta hija del Conde D. Pedro Ansúrez, figura fundamental en la historia de Valladolid, por haber sido el fundador de la villa. Son los Premostratenses, quienes primero se establecen en Retuerta, la que se constituye como casa–madre de la orden en España. Sancho, primer abad y monje de la inaugural fundación española, era descendiente del Conde D. Pedro Ansúrez, por tanto también familiar de la Condesa fundadora Doña Mayor. Desde sus orígenes, el monasterio de Santa María de Retuerta contó con el apoyo de la monarquía, pontífices y particulares y es en este monasterio donde se celebran los Capítulos Generales de la orden. Formó parte de la red de monasterios que sirvió para asentar la reconquista cristiana. Los diversos documentos encontrados colocan a estas tierras como una explotación antiquísima y con gran arraigo y tradición en el cultivo de la vid, alrededor de la Abadía Santa María de Retuerta. Todo ello refuerza el gran potencial turístico de la zona al combinarse el interés cultural de los grandes edificios históricos con el atractivo de los vinos de calidad . La Desamortización de Mendizábal en 1835 determinaría la expulsión de los monjes del monasterio. Pasó entonces a manos del Estado que lo fue cediendo a diferentes empresas y particulares, hasta que en 1988 la finca pasó a ser propiedad del Grupo Novartis, que con todo su empeño, ha retomado exitosamente su ancestral actividad vitivinícola, ahora a través de la Bodega Abadía Retuerta, y hoy Abadia Retuerta Le Domaine.
Acierto empresarial.
La abadía se sitúa en el término municipal de Sardón de Duero, en la margen izquierda del río Duero.
Consta de estilos arquitectónicos muy diferenciados: Tardorrománico y gótico con elementos de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII. Si el patrimonio se ha salvado en muchos lugares gracias a iniciativas eclesiásticas y a la administración, en algunos casos como el del Monasterio de Retuerta, ha sido la iniciativa privada empresarial la que ha sabido poner en valor el patrimonio histórico, salvando a este importante monumento de la destrucción que padecieron otros muchos. Disperso está su patrimonio escultórico o pictórico aunque no perdido pues hoy se pueden admirar en otros emplazamientos. La fachada muestra una ampliación de la loggia sur del claustro, que es la Hospedería. En la antigua hospedería, las 27 habitaciones dobles y 3 suites de LeDomaine han sido cuidadosamente restauradas y dotadas de un estilo único, de acuerdo a las exigencias de un hotel 5 estrellas con todos los servicios que usted esperaría encontrar en un hotel de lujo, como muestra de ello, el servicio completo de mayordomía. Ocho de las habitaciones dobles, se ubican en el edificio de las antiguas Caballerizas de la Abadía, y cuentan con acceso directo al Santuario, nuevo centro de Wellness & Spa LeDomaine. Desde cada habitación podrá contemplar que durante su estancia, estará sumergido en un auténtico mar de vides. Cabe recordar que el hotel se encuentra en la Abadía Santa María de Retuerta del siglo XII, es por ello que presenta una simbiosis perfecta entre las personas y la naturaleza, como toda arquitectura romana que se precie. Por encima la espadaña- campanario se sitúa junto a la cabecera de la iglesia. Data de los años 1655-1656. La iglesia, que tiene función de apostolado (espadaña), conserva una planta irregular. Destaca el cabecero de estilo románico frente a partes construidas en etapas posteriores, que se ubican en el gótico septentrional. También merecen una reseña individual el claustro, la sala capitular y el refectorio.
