Reseña histórica.
Se tienen noticias del consumo de vino berciano al compás de las explotaciones mineras, más concretamente la explotación aurífera en Las Médulas, desde el principio de nuestra era. Tras el comienzo de la cristianización del Bierzo, a partir del siglo IV, comienza la propagación del cultivo de la vid, al amparo de la implantación de varios Monasterios en El Bierzo, y durante los siglos sucesivos. En total se registran un total de 25 Monasterios en El Bierzo, lo que posteriormente en la Edad Media dio en llamarse la Tebaida Berciana. Existe documentación que permite afirmar, a través de San Valerio, que en el Siglo VII existen viñedos en los alrededores de Bergidum (Bierzo), en Cacabelos, donde en su relato San Valerio menciona la vendimia, cuyos días eran de fiesta y regocijo. Monjes y campesinos roturan el monte para plantar viñedos, o reciben viñas de Señores, existiendo multitud de referencias de compraventa de viñedos desde los siglos XII y XIII (con referencias del precio pagado incluidas), así como concesiones para el trabajo de las viñas, bien sea por los monjes o por los campesinos, con o sin el amparo de los sucesivos Condes que tuvo el Bierzo en la Edad Media. Más prolífica es la documentación que relaciona el cultivo de la vid en El Bierzo durante la Edad Contemporánea y la Edad Moderna. Desde el siglo XVIII existen estadísticas más habituales sobre la extensión del viñedo y las producciones de vino en El Bierzo. A pesar de que el auge y la riqueza que el carbón aportó al Bierzo en las primeras décadas del Siglo XX, y retrasó la recuperación del cultivo de viñedo en El Bierzo, durante los años 30, 40 y 50 del Siglo XX, el cultivo de la vid y el vino en El Bierzo mitigó el hambre en los pueblos del Bierzo rural, desde Cacabelos hasta Villafranca del Bierzo, desde Camponaraya hasta Priaranza del Bierzo.
La Denominación de Origen Bierzo.
La Denominación de Origen Bierzo fue reconocida, con carácter provisional, el 3 de junio de 1988 y se procedió al nombramiento del Consejo Regulador provisional el 3 de octubre de 1988. Posteriormente, el 11 de noviembre de 1989, se reconoció la Denominación de Origen Bierzo y se aprobó el Reglamento de la Denominación de Origen Bierzo y de su Consejo Regulador, publicándose en el B.O.E. el día 12 de diciembre de 1989. El Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Bierzo se ocupa de velar por el cumplimiento de su reglamento, donde se establecen, entre otros, los requisitos de viticultura, control y producción de los vinos del Bierzo, amparados bajo la Denominación de Origen. El nacimiento de la D.O. Bierzo era imprescindible debido a la preponderancia económica del sector vitivinícola en esta comarca leonesa y, ante la necesidad de una regulación que fomentara la calidad y comercialización de los cada vez más numerosos vinos bercianos.
Geografía, geología y clima.
La Comarca del Bierzo, situada en el noroeste de la provincia de León, en el seno de la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León y está conformada, por un lado, por un conjunto de valles dentro de una zona montañosa (el alto Bierzo) y por otro por una basta y llana depresión (el bajo Bierzo) que son determinantes parta los tipos de cultivo de la zona. Ocupa un área de 2.954,28 kilómetros, lo que supone el 18% de la superficie provincial. Geográficamente limita con las provincias de Ourense, Lugo y Asturias y es un eje de comunicación entre Galicia, León y Asturias. El viñedo en El Bierzo se caracteriza por estar compuesto por muchos viñedos de poca extensión, estando en manos de un gran número de propietarios, es un tipo de cultivo minifundista. Los viñedos están plantados en la mayoría de los caso en laderas con más o menos pendiente, en alturas que van desde los 450 a los 800 metros sobre el nivel del mar y orientación variable. El suelo del viñedo del Bierzo se asienta sobre materiales del Mioceno recubiertos por una capa del cuaternario. La textura es franco-limosa, moderadamente ácidos, su pH está próximo a 5,5, con ausencia de carbonatos, propio de climas húmedos. Los suelos en ladera están constituidos por una mezcla de elementos gruesos, cuarcitas y pizarras. El Bierzo tiene un microclima muy especial, muy adecuado a los cultivos de la zona. La barrera natural de la Sierra de los Ancares calma el ímpetu de las borrascas atlánticas y genera una climatología continental, con influencia del Océano, apropiada para el cultivo de la vid. Las precipitaciones anuales son de 721 milímetros y la temperatura media de 12,3°C, registrándose temperaturas mínimas de 3,6°C en los meses fríos y máximas de 23,6°C en los meses más calurosos. La insolación media anual se cifra entre 2.100 y 2.200 horas de sol.
Las uvas.
Bajo el amparo de la Denominación de Origen Bierzo se producen hasta 6 variedades de uva, perfectamente adaptadas todas ellas a las características de los suelos y al clima de la región. La más usada es la mencía, que es una uva tinta y constituye la principal variedad del Bierzo, representando hasta el 75% del total de uva cultivada en la zona de producción, por lo que podemos decir que hablar de Mencía es hablar de Bierzo y viceversa. En la elaboración de los vinos blancos se utiliza la variedad palomino, también conocida como Jerez o Listán, y es la segunda en importancia en la comarca, representando cerca del 20% de la uva producida en la zona. En tercer lugar, nos encontramos con la uva godello, otra variedad de uva blanca, que representa el 4% del total de la uva que se cultiva en la zona de producción amparada por la D.O. Bierzo. En menor medida se utilizan uvas de la variedad doña blanca que supone el 2,4% de la producción Bierzo, garnacha tintorera el 2% y la uva malvasía que no llega al 1%.
Vinos D.
O. Bierzo.
Los vinos del Bierzo tienen personalidad propia y unas peculiares características que nos dan Casi 80 bodegas estaban registradas este año 2018 en el Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Bierzo, produciendo unos vinos con personalidad propia y unas singulares características que nos hablan del buen hacer los viticultores del Bierzo. Hay que tener en cuenta que los vinos del Bierzo pueden presumir de ser únicos en el mundo por una peculiaridad que los hace únicos, ya que esta región cuenta con la mayor proporción de viñedo viejo por superficie total del mundo. En la D.O. Bierzo se elaboran vinos blancos elaborados fundamentalmente con las variedades autorizadas godello y doña blanca, complementados con Palomino y Malvasía en diferentes porcentajes. Los rosados se elaboran con un 50% de la variedad Mencía mezclada con otras uvas tintas o blancas. Se elaboran vinos tinto jóvenes de primer o segundo año, elaborados mayoritariamente con variedad mencía en una proporción de al menos un 70%. Los vinos envejecidos en barrica se elaboran fundamentalmente con variedad mencía manda y, en función del tiempo de envejecimiento, obtenemos crianzas, reservas y grandes reservas.
