Mosela.

La región vitivinícola Mosela es la más conocida de las 13 regiones vitivinícolas alemanas y, al mismo tiempo, el tercer mayor productor de vino en Alemania. La región vinícola sigue el curso del Mosela que comienza en Francia y desemboca en Alemania, donde gira bruscamente durante 150 millas (250 km) y se deposita en el Rin en su camino hacia el Mar del Norte. Historia.

Los primeros en cultivar la vid en Alemania fueron los legionarios romanos y, en la Edad Media, los monasterios continuaron desarrollando viticultura mediante el cultivo de los mejores viñedos. Un buen ejemplo es el monasterio cisterciense Eberbach, en Rheingau. Tal como sucedió en Borgoña, cuando Napoleón conquistó el valle del Rin, las grandes propiedades de los monasterios se dividieron entre el estado y los campesinos. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los vinos alemanes, el "Liebfrauenmilch" o el "Kröver Nacktarsch", no alcanzaban una calidad suficiente, es decir, eran excesivamente dulces y de muy bajo costo, eso dañó la reputación del Riesling a nivel internacional. Para lavar esa imagen negativa, un grupo de viticultores alemanes consiguieron en la década de los setenta y ochenta trabajar la calidad de las cepas, a riesgo de lastrar la cantidad, hasta conseguir lo que hoy en día reconocidos enólogos llaman el "Boom del Riesling". Entre las ciudades de Trier y Koblenz, a lo largo del río Mosela y sus afluentes, Saar y Ruwer, encontramos uno de los mejores distritos vitivinícolas de Alemania. Los vinos que provienen de las laderas de las terrazas son vivos, ligeros, elegantes.y tiene un encanto sin igual entre los vinos blancos del mundo. Muy por encima de las laderas, donde se obtienen los mejores vinos Riesling, dominan las tierras de pizarra. En el fondo del valle, la tierra se vuelve arcillosa y más fértil y aquí se cultiva el Müller Thurgau especialmente para la producción de vinos más simples. El Riesling de esta zona da un vino con reflejos verdosos, a veces casi espumosos, ligeros, con un maravilloso aroma a flores y con notas de minerales y pedernal. Los vinos más importantes se encuentran alrededor de Wiltingen y Sharzhofberg en el Sarre y Ruwer en el centro de Mosela, alrededor de Piesport, Brauneberg, Bernkkastel, Graach, Wehlen, Zeltingen y Erden.

Riesling.

La región vinícola Q.b.A. Mosel es especial por sus vinos Riesling, una uva que se caracteriza, en general, por sus aromas frescos y claramente distinguibles cuando es joven, y que armonizan al envejecer, especialmente al llegar a diez años de envejecimiento. Los viñedos de Riesling representan más del 60% de las cepas plantadas, conviviendo con el Müller-Thurgau que es la segunda en importancia. Originaria de Alemania,​ la uva riesling es la más conocida en su país natal, muy apreciada por su característica “transparencia” y la influencia del suelo en sus aromas. El riesling alemán se caracteriza, en general, por sus aromas frescos y claramente distinguibles cuando es joven, y que armonizan al envejecer, especialmente al llegar a diez años de envejecimiento. El valle del Mosel es ideal para la producción del Riesling porque permite que las uvas tengan una agradable acidez y, por lo tanto, una mejor conservación a través de los años. Además, el tipo de tierra es rocosa y de grano fino, durante el día tiende a calentarse y cuando llega la noche mantiene el calor para que las uvas no se congelen, así no se interrumpe el proceso natural de fotosíntesis de las plantas. Esta característica facilita el drenaje del agua en época de lluvias. De acuerdo a las tradiciones locales, en la región del Mosela, el vino debía ser embotellado en botellas altas, estrechas y de color verde.

Los vinos.

Los mejores vinos de Mosel pueden competir fácilmente con los vinos blancos de más alta calidad del mundo. Son vinos ligeros con bajo contenido de alcohol, notas minerales y un muy buen equilibrio entre dulzura y acidez. Estos vinos de Mosel Riesling pueden ser secos o dulces, pero los aromas primarios son fáciles de identificar pues son distintos al resto de uvas. A la vista son de color amarillo pálido que van ganando intensidad a medida que envejecen. Su nariz, cuando son jóvenes, tiene una intensidad media con notas de lima y melaza, a veces con aromas ligeramente reductores de notas plásticas o minerales. A medida que los vinos envejecen, revelan aromas de alta intensidad de miel, albaricoque,limón meyer y petroleo. Ese olor a hidrocarburo puede ser desagradable para algunos, pero para otros es un indicador clásico del Riesling alemán. En boca tiene una estructura que hace que sea tan intrigante, alto en acidez que se equilibra con cierto nivel de dulzura. Los vinos secos tienen alrededor de 6-10 g/l de azúcar residual y los vinos semidulces pueden tener hasta 30-40 g/l. La acidez persiste en el paladar y produciendo un agradable hormigueo. En términos generales, los vinos de Mosel tienen un contenido de alcohol bajo a medio bajo que varía entre 7.5 y 11.5. Se sabe que el Riesling alemán envejece bien, pudiendo resistir en condiciones óptimas hasta 40 años cuando se trata de vinos gran cosecha, incluso los vinos más baratos pueden envejecer durante 5 años y desarrollar un tono dorado profundo con aromas de miel y su característico aroma a petroleo.
