Cuando el piojo de la raíz de la vid filoxera llegó a Madeira a fines del siglo XIX y mató a las vides, los isleños replantaron con vides híbridas estadounidenses, que eran resistentes a la plaga. Desde entonces, se han plantado variedades europeas nuevas y mejores, pero quedan muchas vides americanas. Clima.
