Historia.
La bodega Girlan fue fundada en 1923 en un histórico edificio del Cinquecento de la localidad de Girlan / Cornaiano, en el municipio de Appiano. 23 viticultores dieron inicio a esta bodega cooperativa que ejemplifica no sólo la fuerza de la unión, sino también la posibilidad de alcanzar la excelencia con esta estrategia. En la actualidad la bodega cuenta con 200 socios cuyos terrenos tienen una hectárea de media, algunos de ellos en las parcelas de mayor prestigio del Alto Adige.
El Viñedo.
Cornaiano es un famoso pueblo vinícola con una larga historia a sus espaldas y con referencias escritas que datan de 1085. Sus viñedos se localizan entre 250 y 550 metros de altitud, en terrenos de diversa composición que favorecen el cultivo del viñedo y la excelente calidad de su fruto, ya sean las variedades autóctonas como las internacionales. Estas últimas, sobre todo las variedades pinot noir, pinot blanc, chardonnay y schiava, son las que forman parte de las experimentaciones y nuevos coupages que lleva a cabo la bodega. La atención diaria al viñedo y el respeto al entorno caracterizan sin duda el trabajo de Girlan, de modo que cada uno de sus vinos consigue transmitir el territorio con franqueza y autenticidad. También cotidiana es la colaboración del enólogo de la bodega, Gerhard Kofer, con el resto de asociados, especialmente en lo que se refiere a la elaboración de los vinos de alta gama de la empresa, auténticos referentes entre los vinos del Alto Adige.

Origen.
La pinot blanc es una variedad de uva producto de una mutación genética de la pinot gris, que a su vez también es una mutación de la pinot noir. Históricamente, la pinot blanc ha sido usada tanto para los vinos franceses de Borgoña y de Champaña, y sigue cultivándose en ambos lugares. Al pinot blanc se le conoce también por Eli pinot (Slovenia), Grossburgunder (Austria), Klevner (Austria), Pino blan (Bulgaria), Pinot Bianco (Italia, Malta, Alemania), Pinot (en Italia), Rulandské biele (Slovaquia, Weisser Burgunder (Alemania y Austria), Weissburgunder (Alemania, Austria, Reino unido y en algunas zonas de Italia).
Características.
El pinot blanc es una variedad bastante vigorosa, mas productiva que el pinot noir o el pinot gris, presentando una regularidad en la producción. Se produce en cepas de porte semierecto cuya brotación y maduración es entre media y temprana, y su fertilidad es elevada. Los racimos de pinot blanco son de tamaño pequeño a mediano, cilíndricos o cónico-cilíndricos, con hombros marcados, compactos y homogéneos. Las uvas que conforman esos racimos son esféricas, de tamaño medio, con una piel verde amarillenta que va tomando tonos dorados al madurar. Las cepas de pinot blanco se deberían cultivar en suelos profundos, cálidos y pedregosos, muy bien adaptada a las zonas septentrionales. Es una variedad que, a pesar de ser de brotación relativamente temprana, resiste bastante bien al frío, pero bastante delicada en lo que a enfermedades de la vid se refiere. Es relativamente sensible a la clorosis.
Zonas de cultivo.
En Alsacia (Francia), Alemania, Luxemburgo, Italia, Hungría, República Checa y Eslovaquia se produce un vino con cuerpo de esta variedad.
